By and large the thought of a studio visit fills me with dread. It's an invasion, almost like a burglary, but one I'm invited to be present for. The curator is coming round to do some trolling, in both the traditional and modern senses of the word.
For the show at Provence, curated by Jenny's, I'm amongst friends, and so can let my hair down. The work is shown flat, in an informal and discoverable manner. The figure of the artist is repeated several times, and because he's comfortable he's happy to have his private world on display; puking, wanking, shitting and pissing, suiciding, drugging and drinking are all out in the open.
The 23 drawings are of various male artist's signature works, spanning from the late 19th to early 21st century. Rendered in marker pen on Bristol board, they represent studies, or copies of the works by the artists and are overlaid with unambiguous descriptions of the personality traits that lie encoded within the psyches of their creators.
Our efforts as artists often get used, exploited and misrepresented. We have very little say in what gets said or then happens to our work. In recent times the patriarchy is being dissolved, the male artist has much less to say. This exhibition represents an effort to address both the historie codings and recent climate of adjustment.
