The complete Berlin Wall on CD-ROM
Perspective of the death strip
In February 1990, when the border fortifications were still controlled, Franz John ventured into the death strip for the first time by bicycle and video camera to experience the "untouchable".
He was not interested in the view from West to East or East to West, but in what he calls the "interzone", the forbidden area between the two border fortifications.
Almost incidentally, this material was used to create what is probably the only complete documentation of the dismantling of the Berlin Wall.
The "interzone" perspective
The CD-ROM "interzone" is a complex, virtual journey through 180 km of death strip and border fortifications that existed in and around Berlin for more than 30 years. It playfully combines historical image and video documents with the artistic dream worlds of Tarkovsky and William S. Burroughs. Black holes, floating zeros and randomly controlled animations beam the user into unexpected levels of reality and create a strange cosmic vacuum and energy field.
