In September 2012, John Cage, one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, would have been 100 years old. As an exceptionally multi-talented artist, he had a decisive influence on the development of music and the visual arts. This volume focuses on the visual artist Cage and ventures a new look at his theoretical references, artistic environment and reception in Europe. At the same time, it offers an overview of the genesis of his work since the 1930s and Cage's relationships with the artists of classical modernism in Europe. For example, Cage organized exhibitions of works by Kandinsky, Klee and Jawlensky in Seattle in 1939. Essays shed light on Cage's central themes such as chance and silence, but also on his radical attitude towards the idea of the museum and the presentation of art.
