Rico Scagliola & Michael Meier - Neue Menschen
Rico Scagliola and Michael Meier spent two and a half years recording young people, resulting in an archive of photographs and videos into which Neue Menschen provides an insight.
Today's young people represent the first generation to have grown up with the visual worlds of the Internet. Self-presentation platforms such as Myspace and Facebook are a matter of course for them; they know how to present themselves in pictures from an early age. Meier and Scagliola make use of the visual sophistication and skillful self-staging of young people and integrate the images and fantasies they project into their visual cosmos. Document and staging become one. Neue Menschen offers a unique insight into a world in which images and life are becoming increasingly intertwined - the home of digital natives. Neue Menschen offers interior views of this brave new world, in which the classic themes that drive youth and pop culture find a contemporary expression - sex and longing, ideal and reality, beauty and abyss.
