Shock Treatment - Karen Finley
Shock Treatment - Karen Finley
A member of the notorious "NEA Four" in 1990, a group of artists who were denied funding due to the controversial nature of their work, Finley is renowned for her provocative performance art, spanning a variety of mediums including literature, visual art, film, and music, and tackling themes of female and sexual oppression and rage among other societal taboos. Titled after her AIDS-era performance piece, this landmark collection comprises monologues, prose, poems, and sketches (drawn by "patients" enduring shock treatment), including "The Constant State of Desire," "We Keep Our Victims Ready," "It's Only Art," and "The Black Sheep." Praised by the likes of Kathleen Hanna, Eileen Myles, and Justin Vivan Bond, the text was recently reissued in a 25th-anniversary edition. Illustrated in black-and-white.
